For the first time the Olympic creed that "the most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part" was publicly proclaimed. In the picture is Dorando Pietri finishing the marathon first but he was disqualified as he collapsed, went the wrong way and had to be helped to the line. In recognition of his achievement he was given a special silver gilded cup by Queen Alexandra. The 1908 Olympics also prompted establishment of standard rules for sports, and selection of judges from different countries rather than just the host.
