Grays pleasure beach opened in July 1906. The development was part of a bold attempt to create a seaside atmosphere on the Grays riverside, which involved the construction of gardens, a boating lake, and a swimming pool. The sandy beach was kept in place by a low wall, but nevertheless needed continual replenishment with bargeloads of fine sand from the East Coast. Open air band concerts and other entertainments helped to maintain the seaside illusion.
