This herbaceous plant grows to around 1.5 metres (5 ft) tall. It likes moist low-lying ground. It is dioecious (i.e. there are separate male or female plants). Each plant has racemes of mauve flowers. The fruit is an achene about 2 or 3 mm long, with a pappus with hairs for wind dispersal. The plant flowers from July to early September.
