“No bombs were dropping in London, so I returned home to Fulham in time for Christmas. My sister, now 15, had got bored with the ‘country’ and had left for home a few weeks earlier. In January I had no school to go to, the teachers and most pupils had been evacuated. I spent my free time by going to the ‘pictures’ sometimes after dark on my own. I walked a lot from the Ouse to Hammersmith Bridge and along the embankment to Barnes and back. Which is about 5 miles.

A good friend of mine got a part time job as a delivery boy, riding a big tricycle, which had one wheel at the back with a saddle above and a big box between the two wheels at the front. He was only 13 and not much bigger than me, so had to have block of wood fitted to the pedals so that he could just reach them […]
The box was for groceries, but he didn’t put the groceries in the box, he put them on the rack on top. I sat inside the box and travelled around with him. My friend said that when I was singing, people by the roadside would see his lips not moving and think he was a ventriloquist.”
