“I would like to finish by telling you what happened to my Hatfield school. Early one morning I heard [a Doodle Bug] bomb flying overhead. The engine stopped then a few seconds later [there was] a loud explosion. We knew we were safe but that someone else’s house not far away had probably been destroyed.

Later that day we learnt that the bomb had landed in St. Audrey’s play ground, demolishing most of the school and some nearby houses. Some people were killed and injured. Fortunately, it was early morning before any children were in the school. This was about 2 years after I had left school. About the same time my old school The Avon More School in London was badly damaged by a flying bomb. Perhaps it is a good job I hadn’t been at any other schools.
