Despite the fact that many children were evacuated from London to escape the bombings, the area of Hatfield and Welwyn was still occasionally bombed!
The de Havilland aircraft factory in Hatfield (where the University of Hertfordshire now stands) was a prime target for attack. However, a dummy airfield was built in Panshanger to distract the attention of German bombers.
It it important to remember that a sense of humour was important during the war years. As many of these photos show, horror and destruction had to be balanced alongside humour and good spirit.
