The Home Guard was formed of only men who were not eligble to serve in the army for reasons such as being too young, too old or already in a job (reserved occupation) that was deemed vital to the wear effort.
Whilst these men have today become a parody, due to television, their voluntary and unequipped role was vital and one of the first lines of defence against a fully trained and equipped German Army!
