During the Second World War, people not only had to change the way they worked. A philosophy of 'Make do and mend' became a central way to live due to the lack of material goods and the effect of rationing. Not only did this mean that old metal work was frequently collected and melted down but clothing material and any unwanted items would be either broken up or used for a new innovative purpose.
