Water Dock or Giant Water Dock is a perennial herbaceous plant in the genus Rumex, native to fens and freshwater banks. It is the tallest species in the genus, with flowering stems reaching a height of 1.5-2 m. It is in flower from July to September, and the seeds ripen from August to September. The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by wind. It is noted for attracting wildlife. It will grow in light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils but does not grow on acidic soils. It prefers open ground or semi-shade such as light woodland. It grows in water, moist or wet soils. The young leaves and seeds have been cooked and eaten in the past. Picture taken at Felmersham, Bedfordshire on 31st August 2009.
