A very hairy upright plant with heart-shaped leaves borne in opposite pairs. The flowers have a concave upper lip and a three lobed white marked lower lip. The sepals form a tube with five long pointed teeth. The leaves just below the flower whorls are shorter and narrower than the other stem leaves. The plant was once used to stem bleeding and cure wounds - a poultice was made from the leaves and other green parts of the plant. The plant contains an oil that has antiseptic like qualities. The plant usually flowers July to August. Picture taken 31st August at Odell, Bedfordshire.
