A native semi-evergreen plant that grows in damp places in woods and hedges with large, stalkless leaves. The leaves of Tutsan were once used on wounds to help them heal. Its dried leaves were also used for scented bookmarks. The flowers are yellow with numerous prominent stamens. There are only a few flowers in each cluster. The young fruits (usually more than one unlike the picture shown here) are red but ripen to black. It flowers June to August. Picture taken August 31st 2009 at Felmersham, Bedfordshire.
