The Palace of Knossos is situated a few miles to the south of the modern day city of Heraklion. In Minoan times it was a major settlement of the Minoan civilization and probably the political and cultural centre of that civilization. It has long been associated with the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur (see link below).
The ruins at Knossos were discovered in 1878 by Minos Kalokairinos, a Cretan merchant but it was not fully explored until 1900 when Arthur Evans, an englishman, bought the entire site and began excavations.
