A plant associated with the arrival of Spring. It usually begins flowering in March, however these early flowering plants were already out in January. Primrose is a herb with a rosette of very crinkled oblong/spoon shaped leaves. The pale yellow flowers are held on slightly woolly stalks. It flowers March to June in woods, hedgerows and grasslands. It produces two kinds of flowers, and seeds are only produced when pollen from one type of flower is transfered to the other. Many early plants remain unpollenated. Ants are attracted to food stored in the seeds and carry them off. In the middle ages it was used for everything from love potions to headache cures. Picture taken 27th January 2007, near Odell Bedfordshire.
