Dating back to the late 12th century, the Old Town Square started life as the central marketplace for Prague. Over the next few centuries, many buildings of Romanesque, Baroque and Gothic styles were erected around the market. The square has also been the site of demonstrations, confrontations and executions. The Hus Memorial was erected July 1915 and honours the Protestant reformer Jan Hus who was burnt at the stake 500 years previously.
