Herculaneum was an ancient Roman town destroyed by volcanic pyroclastic flows from Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, along with other towns including Pompeii. The modern town of Ercolano now sits on top of much of the ancient buried city. This photo shows the imprint left in the volcanic mud by the huge marble basin which was overturned by the flow.
