A perennial plant of deciduous woods, ancient hedgebanks and meadow edges. It can grow up to 30cm tall. The flowers are solitary and star like when closed. In dull weather they drop. The flowers have white petal like sepals (often with a pinkish blush on the underside). About two thirds up the stem there is a ring of three leaves, each divided into three toothed segments. The fruits are similar to those of a buttercup with a fruiting head of 10-30 downy fruits forming a globe shaped cluster. It flowers from March to May and is poisonous and can cause skin irritation. Picture taken on the 8th April 2007 at Maulden Woods, Bedfordshire.
