The Alexanderplatz is a large public square and transport hub in the Mitte district of Berlin and is often simply referred to as the Alex. During the Communist era the Alex became the centre of the eastern zone of Berlin and was used to show the western world how far advanced East Germany was in terms of building, transport and electronics with the Fernsehturm nearby. In the weeks leading up to the opening of the Berlin Wall in November 1989 the square became the focus of enormous peaceful gatherings and the demonstration on 4th November 1989 was the largest gathering in East German history.
