Leaves of the Silver Birch. Silver Birch is a small tree with rough bark, black at the base and peeling white higher up. The yellowish male catkins appear in Autumn but do not open until spring when the female catkins appear. The two winged fruit is tiny. It is common on woods and heaths. The twigs were used for making brooms.
