Checkpoint 'C' or 'Charlie' was a crossing point between the Soviet and American sectors of Berlin and was located at the crossing of Friedrichstrasse and Zimmerstrasse. After August 1961 when the GDR governemnt constructed the Berlin Wall this was one of the very few places where it was possible to cross between the east and west sectors. Many escape attempts took place at this point, some successful, many more not. It has now become a major tourist atraction in Berlin.
