The Empty Library memorial is situated at the place where on 10th May 1933 Nazi Youth, students and members of the SA removed over 20,000 books from the library of Humboldt University, brought them into the square and burned them. Amongst those destroyed were books by Karl Marx, Heinrich Heine and Thomas Mann. The memorial was created by Micha Ullman. It consists of a glass panel on the surface below which is a room whose walls are lined with empty bookshelves. Nearby stands a plaque with a quotation by Heinrich Heine which roughly translates as " "Where they burn books, they ultimately burn people".
