This piece of land marks the point where the bodies of Adolf Hitler and Eva Braun were burned following their suicide on 30th April 1945. It is just outside the entrance to the former Fuhrerbunker at the back of the huge Reich Chancellery building. The buildings were seriously damaged at the end of the war during the Russian bombardment of the city. No memorial was placed to mark the spot and many people were unaware of its exact location. In the 1960s the GDR began building the apartment blocks which now stand close by and discovered the network of bunkers below this spot. In drilling through for the foundations they ended up flooding and destroying the bunker complex. The spot where Hitler was burned is now a bit of waste ground on which people walk their dogs and park their cars.
