Werner Probst died on 14th October 1961 as he was attempting to cross between the east and west sectors of Berlin. The Berlin Wall had been put in place just 2 months. At 10.30pm on 14 October, he jumped into the river Spree at the SchillingbrΓΌcke and started swimming. Wounded by machine-gun fire on the way across, he was fatally shot in the back as he hauled himself out on the other bank.
