The most common bracket fungus found in birch woods. It is the cause of death of many trees. It starts as a round brownish ball and expands to a kidney shape. It has a smooth leathery upper surface and pale underside with minute white pores. The white flesh is corky, soft and fragrant. However it tastes bitter and is not edible. It is very host specific.
