Jankel Adler
b. 1895, Tuszyn, Poland
d. 1949, Aldebourne, Wiltshire

Left Poland for Berlin after serving in the Russian Army during World War I; later studied at the Akademie der Kunst, Dusseldorf where he became a lecturer, moving in the circle of Paul Klee and Maz Ernst. After many of his paintings were destroyed by the Nazis, he settled in France and later enlisted in the Free Polish Army. He was evacuated to Scotland and remained in Glasgow until 1943 when he settled in London.
