Holly has separate male and female trees. This picture shows the female flower of the Holly showing the ovary. The male stamens present do not develop and are non functional. Holly
is usually found as a small shrub 3-15m but can grow into a large tree. It has smooth thin bark, glossy green leaves with wavy edges and spines It flowers May - August and the female plants produce bright red fruits in Autumn/Winter. Picture taken May 18th 2006 at Maulden, Bedfordshire.
