A shrub or small tree 2-6 meters tall. Spindle produces small greenish white flowers during June and July. Between September and November it produces four lobed fruits, which are a bright coral pink. The fruits open by splits to expose bright orange seed sheaths. It grows in woodlands and by ditches and rivers particularly on calcareous soils. Pictured near Old Warden, Bedfordshire May 7th 2006
