This is part of a very confusing group of hybrid trees. It can be identified however from the very powerful smell emitted from the fat sticky buds in spring. It is a fast growing tree that can reach 30m. with a neat conical crown. The leaves are pale gree above and yellowy below. The tree is a hybrid between two American poplars (Eastern Balsam poplar P. balsamifera and Cottonwood P. deltiodes. As a hybrid it has no male catkins only female and reproduced by suckering. Picture taken at Maulden, Bedfordshire on 12th May 2006.
