Before he left Antarctica, Ponting taught photography to other members of the team so that they could record the final trek to the Pole. This photograph, taken by Bowers, shows from left to right, Evans, Oates, Wilson and Scott. They are crossing the Polar plateau, hauling their supplies behind them. The wheel on the back of the sledge measured the distance travelled.
