On some trees the leaves are now reaching full size. They are easily identifiable the the leaf is longer one side of the stem than the other. This used to be the classic English hedgerow tree. It has small rounded rough-surfaced leaves which are longer on one side than the other. It has slim twigs with dark buds. The red flowers are produced in late February or March ripening by May, to give seeds with round wings. The tree bark is dark and finely ridges in older trees.
