The Bob and Tamar Manoukian Production Workshop is where the sets and scenery are created for the Royal Opera House. It has carpentry, metalwork and fiberglass workshops under one roof as well as an ecologically efficient planted sedum roof and a 100-meter borehole providing the heating. Based in Purfleet, about 20 miles from central London the facility was designed by Nicholas Hare Associates LLP as part of an urban- regeneration project called High House Production Park. Nicholas Hare Architects LLP were appointed by the Royal Opera House in 2007. Designed with an eco roof, the vaulted building was designed to allow fully assembled scenery to be seen as it will on stage, and incorporates continuous rooflights set between the deep primary structural truss members to provide even daylight with reduced glare. The project started on site in October 2009 and completed in November 2010. The new building accommodates a large paint-shop for vertical and horizontal scene-painting as well as carpentry and metal workshops. The workshop was nominated for the New London Architecture Award and the Production Campus was named Project of the Year and won the Regeneration award at the 2011 RICS East of England awards in May 2011.
