Alcatraz Island is located in the San Francisco Bay, 1.5 miles offshore from San Francisco, California. Alcatraz was used to house prisoners as early as 1861. The water surrounding Alcatraz is known for being very cold with treacherous currents making escape almost impossible. The prison finally closed in 1963.
When prisoners first arrived at the prison, they were given their uniforms at the reception area before using the communal showers.
