The Riesenrad was one of the earliest big wheels. It was built in 1897 to celebrate Emperor Franz Josef I's golden Jubilee,
A permit for its demolition was issued in 1916 but didn't go ahead due to a lack of funds. It was damaged during WWII and rebuilt with 15 gondolas.
