A small tree with rough bark, black at the base and peeling white higher up. The yellowish male catkins appear in Autumn but do not open until spring when the female catkins appear. The two winged fruit is tiny. It is common on woods and heaths. The twigs were used for making brooms. Picture taken 7th June 2006 at Stevington Bedfordshire.
