The Large Red can be found across Europe. It is one of the first damselflies to emerge in the year in April or May. Females occur in many colour forms, but all have yellow bands around the abdominal segments. They can be found around ponds and rivers. Damselflies are similar to dragonflies, but the adults can be distinguished by the fact that the wings of most damselflies are held along, and parallel to, the body when at rest. They are often smaller and weaker fliers than Dragonflies. Damselflies undergo incomplete metamorphosis, with an aquatic nymph stage. The female lays eggs in water or water filled cavities. The nymphs feed on daphnia and other small aquatic organisms. After several moults the winged adult emerges. It eats flies, mosquitoes, and other small insects. This picture was taken at Bromham Nature Reserve on 27th May 2012.
