An evergreen shrub or small tree, growing to 5-10 m tall, rarely to 18 m tall, with a trunk up to 50 cm diameter. The leaves are dark green, shiny and leathery. It produces upright flowers in racemes 5-12cm long. The individual flower petal are small white and about 4mm long. It was introduced from SE Europe and is now widespread in gardens, parks but also, as pictured here, in roadside ditches. Picture taken at Stagsden, Bedfordshire - August 28th 2006.
