A native to North America and Asia, this tree was introduced around 1854 and is now widely found. The tree grows up to 60 meters and has a narrow, conical crown. It has reddish brown scaly bark and scale like needles. The greenish female flowers are borne on the tips of the shoots. The cones, green at first mature in September and release small winged seeds. It thrives best in well drained moist soils and likes plenty of light. Pictured Odell chruch yard, Bedfordshire - mid December 2005
