Between 130 and 140 hens are kept at Oak House farm in Suffolk to produce eggs. These hens are known as laying birds. They live in a mobile hen house and have access to the outside. The hen house and enclosure is moved up and down a strip of land so that the hens have access to a fresh grass area when the grass in the old area gets worn down. Moving the hut also gives the grass chance to recover. The hens tend to lay well for about 18 months then they are moved up to the farm. There are now so many eggs being produced at the farm that they have had to buy an egg washing machine. Before this the farmer had to wash them all by hand before putting them in the egg boxes.
