This plant is found throughout the UK except in the North. It is most dense in the South and East Anglia. It grows in calcareous damp meadows, marshes, dune-slacks and by roads and paths. It is a perennial herb, growing up to 50cm. It flowers late May to July.


Flowers are dark, rose, purple with spread pale sepals and dark spots and streaks on the lips. Leaves are green and unspotted.
