The majority of Red Polls in the UK are used as suckler cows. They rear their calves until weaning at about 8 months. How the breed can be used for milk production as well. On this farm they are used for breeding beef cattle. The breed is an efficient converter of forage requiring little or no additional feed, they usually calf easily, are long lived (thus fewer replacements needed) and will adapt to single or multiple suckling. They can outwinter, however cold and wet, if properly fed (but on this farm they overwinter in the barns). They provide excellent quality beef and are clam and easy to handle. The cows make excellent mothers. Picture taken at Oak House Farm, Suffolk, April 2007.
