The Naze Tower was built in 1720 by Trinity House as a navigational mark to guide vessels sailing in and out of Harwich. The Tower was built on the Naze as it was the highest point in the district. The Naze Tower is an important early brick building, as this material was only just coming into common use. It was a replacement for a much shorter wooden construction with a fire beacon. This navigation aid is the predecessor of the reflective lighthouse which became common place in the 19th century.
