Cape St Vincent was believed to be the 'End of the World' until the discovery of The Americas. The cape is situated at the extreme south-west corner of Portugal. The limestone cliffs are very high indeed and are dominated by the lighthouse which is still regarded as so important that it has seven permanent lighthouse-keepers and their families living there.
Several sea-battles have been fought within sight of these cliffs, and the English Admiral, Jervis, received his title, Lord St. Vincent, after his great naval victory here.
