Henry VIII gave the priory to one of his friends, Sir Francis Bryan, after the Dissolution. All of the buildings were demolished except for the bell tower. In 1551 St Mary's became the Dryden's private family church when they inherited Canons Ashby. The family kept the church open as a parish church for the local congregation. It still remains private today - one of only four private parish churches in the country.
In the 16th century, John Dryden was given the estate by his father-in-law. Using masonry from the fallen priory buildings, he first built the staircase tower and then an H-shaped mansion house.
The estate was given to the National Trust in 1981
