Hallstatt was built within a very narrow space between the lake and the Dachstein cliffs. Houses are either layered on top of each other on the cliff wall or project out on the lake supported by poles. The Evangelical Church is in the centre of the town, but the Catholic Church had to be cut out of the rock. There was also very little room in the cemetery so the bones of the dead were frequently dug up after about 10 years and placed in the "Beinhaus" (a former mortuary). Since 1600 more than 1,200 skulls and bones have accumulated. Many of the skulls are painted with floral designs and often the name, date and cause of death of the deceased.
