The fur of a cat is hair that covers its body.
Cats have two layers of hair...Down hair that is short and found next to its skin providing insulation. Guard hair which is longer and contains pigmentation giving the animal its own distinct colour. Many animals, such as domestic cats, erect their guard hairs as part of their threat display when agitated.
