The parish church in Thaxted is dedicated to St John the Baptist, Our Lady and St Laurence. It dates from the early 14th Century and building continued well into the 16th Century. The organ in the church was played by local resident Gustav Holst. It is a unique, little altered, Georgian organ which was awarded a Grade One certificate as a rare instrument of its period, one of only 2 surviving, the other is installed in Buckingham Palace.
