When the first coffins were introduced in Egypt, around 3000BC, this prevented direct contact between the body and the hot sand and so the body rotted. The natural mummification process was lost. This burial shows the skeleton and remains of an early basket work coffin. Picture taken at the British Museum, London January 2007.
