Early Egyptian coffins could be made from Basket work or wood. However the body was no longer naturally preserved as it did not have direct contact with the hot sand. As the Egyptians believed the body was required in the afterlife this led to mummification (the preserving of the body). Picture taken at the British Museum, London January 2007.
