The tombstone of Centurion Marcus Favonius Facilis. It shows the costume of a Roman Centurion. The vine stick tells that he is a centurion. He is wearing a dagger, body and leg armour. The tomb would have originally be brightly painted. His tomb was found in Beverley Road, Colchester in 1868. His remains were in a lead urn and a pottery and glass dish that held food and water when first buried. This was to feed the centurion on his journey to the afterlife. His tombstone gave his name, his tribe (Polian Voting Tribe)and that he was a centurion of the Twentieth Legion. Picture taken at Colchester Castle Museum May 2006.
