The pillory was used for a range of offences such as heresy, theft, selling over priced goods and sexual offences. Victims were put in the pillory and could be pelted with rotten eggs and other items. The pillory was still in use to the end of the Georgian and Regency Periods after which its use came to be viewed as barbaric.
