St Thomas's Tower, the Wakefield Tower and the Lanthorn Tower lay at the very heart of the medieval royal lodgings built by Henry III (1216-72) and his son Edward (1272-1307) who was largely responsible for the Tower of London in the form we see today, including both the Traitor's Gate and the ornate entranceways. An ambitious and impatient monarch, the flamboyance of his military prowess was visibly reflected in his life at home.
